Chapter Nineteen

Bas woke to the delicious warmth of Orion’s body wrapped around him. Relaxed, he laced his hand with his lover’s and inhaled deeply. The scent of their passion still lingered in the air around them. Who’d have thought a vampire and a Were would hit it off so well? Not only had they become best friends, but now, they were lovers. Something he’d stubbornly believed too dangerous, something that couldn’t possibly end well. But, now, those fears didn’t seem to matter much.

Turning slowly, he kept Orion’s arm around him and gazed at that handsome face he was so attracted to. How could someone give him so much pleasure—make him feel whole? His relationship with his wolf had become vital to him, their bond sacred. Of all the lovers he’d had, no one had ever made him feel this vulnerable, this willing to open himself, his heart. He felt grateful to be alive. Orion truly was his Starfire, the one who brought light into his world.

Damn, the way his wolf looked at him with all that passion in his eyes made every one of Bas’ defenses melt. The fact that he’d never loved anyone so deeply should have alarmed him. He never really allowed himself to feel this depth of burning passion with anyone. He never thought he’d find himself wanting, needing…more. And that it would be a Were to make him feel all those things.

As an Elite Torian, he’d learned to keep himself remote, distant. Sure, he’d had many lovers to satisfy his basic cravings. And, for a long time, that had been enough. There’d even been a woman who he’d dreamed about having a future with, a childhood friend he’d fantasized about, had thought he loved. But even she hadn’t affected him as profoundly as his wolf. Her betrayal had stung, caused him to close off a vital part of himself. He never thought he’d love, again, never believed he’d be capable of such intense feelings.

But, now, he was with the one he trusted above all others, the one he knew would never deceive him. He lifted Orion’s hand and rubbed his knuckles along his jawline. Breathing deeply, his body stirred, but not for sex. Another hunger, this one undeniable for the basic nutrients his body needed. Slipping away from his lover, he pulled on his pants and zipped up, then chose a clean shirt from his closet. While Orion slept soundly, he’d go downstairs and seek the nourishment he required.

After silently closing the door behind him, he made his way down the grand staircase. He was on his way to the kitchen when he passed the parlor and heard voices. Normally, he wouldn’t eavesdrop on his mother’s conversations, but one of the voices sounded familiar. He stopped dead in his tracks. God, he’d know her voice anywhere. It had haunted him in his sleep for a long time. The one woman he had loved, the one who had so cruelly betrayed him, Josette.

Not wanting to announce his arrival, he swung open the doors without knocking first.
